Things To Do in Jhansi

A city with sheer historical prominence, Jhansi is located between the Pahunj and the Betwa rivers in Uttar Pradesh. Jhansi is synonymous to bravery, courageousness and of course the first ever structured battle against the British Empire in Indian sub continent led by Rani Lakshmi Bai. But from an early period Jhansi has been holding an important place in Indian History. The ancient Jhansi was an important part of Chedi, Bundelkhand region. The earlier name of the city was Shankarpur. Years after, it was an iron grip of the Chandela kings. But it was in 17th century when the city got its utmost importance in the terms of prosperity and development. The famous Jhansi Fort was built during the reign of King Bir Singh Deo of Orchha. Afterwards, the region went to the Bundelas. Orchha was the capital of Bundelas. While making a wish to build a new fort in the hill, the Bundela King saw the site and believed to be said that the place seemed Jhain-si or blurred, since then the place was called Jhansi.

Rani Lakshmi Bai

Today, Jhansi is famous mostly for its unforgettable link with the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857 as one major part of the mutiny was led by the widower of the then king of Jhansi Raja Gangadhar Rao. Rani Lakshmi Bai fought with tremendous courage against the British Army and bravely sacrificed her life in 1858. After her fall, Jhansi was given to the Jiyaji Rao Scindhia of Gwalior state. But in 1886 the British government took the city back. After the Independence, Jhansi became a part of Uttar Pradesh state.

The city attracts tourists from all around the country and the world mostly through its glorious historical past. Maharani Lakshmi Bai has always been the centre of attraction in Jhansi. There are several remnants of the Chandelas, Bundelas and Scindhias in and around the city. But today, besides the historical mementos, the city offers many other things to the interested visitors. Historical Trip

Being in Jhansi the first thing a tourist should do is to make a trip to all the important historical places in and around the city. Some major places in Jhansi are:

Jhansi Fort


Jhansi Fort

Then Raja Bir Singh Judao of Orchha built the biggest fort in Jhansi in 1613. The fort was made at the centre of the Jhansi city. The Fort wall would surround the whole city. It had ten gates. Though mostly were ruined, some of these gates still exist. The important gates were named like, Datia Dawaza, Orchha Gate, Jharna Gate, Khandero Gate, Lakshmi Gate, Sagar Gate, Chand gate etc.

Government Museum


Museum


Like any other places with major historical backdrop Jhansi also has a government Museum to keep those historical records intact. The museum is located at the heart of the city with beautiful atmosphere of park, garden etc. The museum has some important and rich collection of the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 and many other significant paintings, documents etc. There is a garden around the museum where the mutiny has been recreated with the metal scraps.

Rani Mahal

The mahal or palace for the queen was made by the king Raghunath II of Nawalkar. It is situated near the Jhansi Fort. There is a collection of oil paintings, various antiques and other collectables. The palace was now converted into a museum. Click Here to Read More

Panch Mahal

The palace where Rani Lakshmi Bai would live with her husband was called the Panch Mahal. It was a five storey building built by aja Bir Singh Deo and thus it was named Panch Mahal.

Samadhyan Tomb

Gulam Gaus Khan was the main gunner of the Royal military of Rani Lakshmi Bai duing the Sepoy Mutiny. Samaghyam is the tomb of Gulam Gaus Khan and a woman gunner named Moti Bai.

Saint Jude’s Shrine

Saint Jude’s Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Uttar Pradesh. It protects the bone of the Saint in the cathedral foundation. This beautiful cathedral holds great importance among the Catholics in India. The saint Jude’s feast is held on 28th October every year.

Kaal Kothri

A prison built by the Maratha Kings was converted into a dungeon by the British for the Indian freedom fighters of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1857.

Orchha

Though it belongs to the state of Madhya Pradesh but situating just 30 kms away from Jhansi, Orchha is of great historical connection to Jhansi for many reasons. Orchha used to be the capital city of the Bundelas who established the Jhansi city. Orchha is situated on the bank of River Betwa and holds picturesque scenario. Lot of historical ruins can be found in the town. Some significant remnants are the Fort, Sheesh Mahal, Jahangir Mahal etc.

Shiva Temple

The Shiva Temple in Jhansi was built during king Naru Shankar. The temple reflects both Bundela-Maratha and the local style of architecture. The temple is famous as Rani Lakshmi Bai herself would come to worship here.

Jhansi Mahotsav


Jhansi Mahotsav

The biggest cultural festival in Jhansi is the Jhansi Mahotsav. It is organized by the tourism department of the State Government. A week-long festival filled with vibrant dance-drama-musical shows and performances all reflect the rich cultural traditions of Bundelkhand. The events are held mostly in the open air auditorium.

Vegetables and Flowers exhibition

The exhibition is a 3-day festival held every year at Narayan Bagh, the state gardens, organized by the state government. The exhibition was basically meant to showcase the farmer’s products in front of the public.

Red Tomato
Red Tomato is a newly opened, clean and comfy restaurant at the Hotel Samrat. The joint offers both Veg and Non-Veg dishes with reasonable prices.

Nav Bharat Restaurant
A moderately highly-priced restaurant located at the Sadar Bazar, Nav Bharat serves both Veg and Non-veg Indian and continental preparations.

National Bakery
National Bakery is a well-furnished and comfortable place for having coffee, snacks or juices. They also serve some fine India, Chinese and Continental meals.
