Localities and Areas in Jhansi

Jhansi comprises of three tehsils, namely Jhansi, Lalitpur and Jalaun in total area measuring 14 square kilometers. Situated at an altitude of 211 feet above sea level, the rough terrain and rocky plateau is prone to extreme weather condition. Present day Jhansi is dotted with many points and places of historical importance. Jhansi is known as a "Gateway to Bundelkhand" and is a major road and rail junction. Jhansi is about 415 kms from Delhi and 292 kms from Lucknow. Three National Highways NH-3, NH-25 and NH-76 pass through the city.

Areas in Jhansi

Jhansi is mostly frequented by visitors on the way to other historical towns Khjuraho, Orchha and Gwalior, which are located in Madhya Pradesh. Some of the chief localities of Jhansi are Old Jhansi, Cantonment area, Sipri bazaar and Nagra.

Jhansi Cantonment Area


The cantonment area was developed by the British in 1832 which was the accommodation site for British civil and military personnel during those times. Jhansi is the district headquaters of 31st Indian Armored Division of the Indian Army stationed in Jhansi Babina Cantt Area. Within the Cantonment area one can find the churches built during the pre-Independence era like the Roman Catholic Church and the Sacred Heart Church.

Manik Chowk in Jhansi


Manik Chowk is the main market area in the heart of Jhansi. From clothing to computer shops, leather goods to home needs this street is dotted with shops, eateries and service shops of all kinds.

Old Jhansi Town


Old Jhansi Town comprises of area that grew up around the Jhansi Fort and other historical places. It is marked by narrow street and small junctions. Some of the areas which need specific mention are: Narayan Bagh, garden which hosts many varieties of flowers and plants built and a great place for recreation too.

Jhansi Fort Area


The fort around which the whole town of Jhansi flourished is a landmark building. It also houses Lakshmi Temple and Ganesh Temple inside the Fort premises. Other places in this area include the Mahakaleshwar Mandir and Gangadhar Rao Chatthri. The Government Museum, Rani Mahal and Pichor Mahal are also located in this part of town.

Sipri Bazaar in Jhansi


This is located west to the old city of Jhansi. Sipri Bazaar was built close to the railway station during 20th century that became popular due to the settlement of Railway employees in and around this area. This was earlier known as Shivpur Bazaar that became to be called as Sipri Bazaar for easy pronunciation. It is now an area that has many commercial as well as residential houses.

Nagra


Nagra is the part of the railway cantonment which grew into a bustling locality of Jhansi due the residence of workers in the railways. It is the most populated area and in a way the modern locality which has many schools, colleges, cinemas and eateries.

Sadar Bazaar in Jhansi


Sadar Bazaar is located adjacent to the Cantonment area of Jhansi. It is lined with modern commercial shops and malls, bungalows and residential houses, clubs and gardens. Many schools and colleges have come up in this area in the recent times.

Hansari in Jhansi


This area is located in North Jhansi, where UP Roadways Bus depot is situated. Known as a residential area, dotted with bungalows and residential houses, one can find few recreational spots here as the Polo ground and the Badminton courts are located here, besides there being few manufacturing and industrial units too.
