Jhansi has phenomenal Railway and Road connectivity with the rest of India due to which it is fast developing as an industrial hub. However, the internal roads, by-lanes, roads leading to towns such as Orchha, Kanpur etc. are not well maintained. Pot holes, dumping areas mark every quarter of the town. It is a typical problem where the urban Jhansi faces problem of severe congestion and bad maintenance of roads while, the rural areas have poor quality roads.

Jhansi falls under water deficient areas in famine prone region. There are approximately 20 man made canals, dams and weirs located in these areas making water available for drinking, irrigation and power generation. Some of the popular dams and canals are Rajghat Canal, Matilda Dam, Pariccha Dam, etc. As a source of surface canal irrigation, there is ample water supply for the farms in these areas. However, lack of efficient and continual power supply in these areas is a major constraint for the development of industries here.

Water Resources in Jhansi


Jhansi Jal Sansthan has been instrumental in ensuring safe drinking water within the city. It has installed close to 10,000 water pumps in the slums and villages near Jhansi and as many as 20,000 families have been provided with individual hand pumps. Water tanks for schools and colleges have been installed too. Practical problems faced for the upkeep and maintenance of water pipes, tanks and pumps are a major area of concern.

Sanitation and Solid Waste Management Jhansi


The main source of solid wastes in the city are bio-medical waste, household waste, slaughter houses, vegetable markets and restaurants. To achieve the necessary results the city is divided into 5 sanitary circles and 12 wards. Each of the wards have been designated with the waste management chain right from collection of waste to disposal and recycling of waste.

Maintenance of sanitation is a big challenge to the authorities in Jhansi. The Jhansi Nagar Nigam has opened several community and public toilets in each circle. People in slums are villages are educated on the need to maintain proper hygiene and thereby use toilets in their locality. However, it has been found that the upkeep of nearly 46% of these toilets is very poor and unusable.
